Ottobrunn, Germany

Ottobrunn Germany

Ottobrunn is a municipality to the south-east of Munich in Bavaria, Germany, founded in 1955. The town is made up mainly of semi-detached and detached houses, with extensive garden areas. It is also home to the German headquarters of Airbus Defence and Space (formerly the European Aeronautic Defence and Space Company, EADS), with most of the Airbus DS site located in the neighbouring community of Taufkirchen. According to the Federal Statistical Office of Germany, Ottobrunn is the second most densely populated municipality in Germany, behind only Munich and ahead of Berlin. The town centre was developed in the mid-1980s, with the town hall completed in 1983 and the community centre in 1986. The community centre is named after the German-Italian composer Ermanno Wolf-Ferrari, who lived in Ottobrunn between 1915 and 1931. A memorial Doric column, known as the Ottosäule and crafted by stone sculptor Anton Ripfel, commemorates the day in 1832 when Otto of Greece passed through what is now Ottobrunn on his way to become king of Greece. The column originally stood exactly 12 km from Munich’s city centre, marking the point on the route where Otto’s father took leave of his son. It was later moved 9 metres to the south-west to allow for the widening of Rosenheimer Landstrasse.
