Petén is a department in the north of Guatemala and the largest in the country by area. Covering 35,854 km² (13,843 sq mi), it makes up roughly one third of Guatemala’s total land area. The departmental capital is the town of Flores. As of the official mid-2018 estimate, Petén had a population of 595,548. Petén borders Belize to the east and Mexico to the west, northwest and north, specifically the Mexican states of Chiapas (to the west), Tabasco (to the northwest) and Campeche (to the north). To the south, it shares borders with the Guatemalan departments of Alta Verapaz and Izabal. Much of its western boundary with Mexico is marked by the Usumacinta River and its tributary, the Salinas River. Parts of Petén’s southern border follow the courses of the Gracias a Dios and Santa Isabel rivers.
