Røros Norway

Røros is a municipality in Trøndelag county, Norway, in the Gauldalen region. The administrative centre is the town of Røros, with villages including Brekken, Glåmos, Feragen, Galåa, and Hitterdalen. The mining town of Røros (the municipal centre) is often called Bergstaden, meaning “mountain town”, due to its historic copper mining. It is one of only two Norwegian towns historically designated as mining towns, alongside the “silver town” of Kongsberg. People in Røros still live and work in its distinctive 17th- and 18th‑century buildings, which led to its designation as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1980. The town has about 80 wooden houses, most of them grouped around courtyards, many with dark tarred-log facades that give the place a medieval feel. Covering 1,956 square kilometres (755 sq mi), Røros is the 32nd-largest of Norway’s 422 municipalities by area. With a population of 5,623, it ranks 187th by population. The population density is 3.2 inhabitants per square kilometre (8.3/sq mi), and the population has fallen by about 0.8% over the last decade.
