Khasab, Oman

Khasab, Oman

Khasab Oman

The capital of the province may be small, but it's far from dull. Its marketplace is filled with the chatter of various languages, including Kumzari (a mixed language of Arabic, Farsi, English, Hindi, and Portuguese), and its port is bustling with activity, much of it semi-illegal trade with Iran. The smugglers are recognized by their upgraded fiberglass boats with outboard motors, lined up along the creeks, waiting for sunset to make the frantic 34-mile dash across the strait to Iran. They bring money and personality to the town, so no one seems eager to drive them away; besides, piracy has been a tradition in this area for over 200 years and locals respect a good tradition.
