North Koh Samui Island, Thailand

North Koh Samui Island Thailand

Ko Samui is an island off the east coast of the Kra Isthmus in Thailand, and is the country’s second-largest island after Phuket. The north of Ko Samui offers abundant tourism opportunities. Bophut Beach, on the north of the island, is a popular starting point for diving tours. Bophut is one of the few places on Samui that still retains some of the island’s original Thai-Chinese atmosphere. It has recently experienced a boom, with new hotels and guesthouses appearing at a rapid pace. The traditional core of Bophut, known as Fisherman’s Village, is a charming area on the east side of the beach, while newer developments are found to the west. Unlike Chaweng, there has been a conscious effort here to discourage more commercial aspects of Thai nightlife and instead appeal to couples and young families. The beach road has preserved much of its charm, although new construction has taken a bit away. Old Chinese shophouses line the narrow street, many of them sensitively converted for modern use as restaurants, cafés, and small trendy shops. The beach itself has about 2 km of white sandy shoreline fringed with coconut palms. The calm waters of the bay make this a popular place for playing or relaxing rather than swimming, as the water is often murky, especially around December. Na Mueang Waterfall is another highlight, where purple rocks surround a stream of water plunging from an impressive height of about 79 m. Mae Nam, also on the north side, is known for its 7 km stretch of beach. The beach has white sand and is lined with coconut trees. The sea is typically calm, although there is a moderate current and the water is not usually clear. The name Mae Nam actually means “river,” with “mae” meaning mother and “nam” meaning water.
