Baden Austria

Baden is a spa town in the Austrian state of Lower Austria and the capital of the Baden District, located south of Vienna. The town features several parks and a picturesque surrounding area, the most frequented part of which is the Helenental Valley. At its entrance, on the right bank of the river, lie the ruins of the 12th-century castle of Rauheneck. On the left bank, just opposite, stands the ruined castle of Rauhenstein, also dating from the 12th century. Farther upstream is Alland, from where a road leads to the old and well-preserved Heiligenkreuz Abbey. The abbey has a Romanesque-style church dating from the 11th century, with fine cloisters and the tombs of several members of the Babenberg family. The highest point in the area around Baden is the peak of Hoher Lindkogel, popularly called Eisernes Tor (Iron Gate), which can be reached by a hike of about three hours.
