It was named after Falmouth in Cornwall, United Kingdom, the birthplace of Sir William Trelawny, the Governor of Jamaica who played a key role in establishing the town. From the outset, Falmouth was carefully planned, with broad streets laid out in a regular grid, a reliable water supply, and substantial public buildings. Remarkably, it had a piped water system before New York City. Today, Falmouth still has a number of notable historic buildings in the Jamaican Georgian style, many of which are in need of careful preservation and restoration.
