It lies on the southern shore of the Absheron Peninsula, which projects into the Caspian Sea. The city’s main tourist area is the Old Town, known as Icheri Sheher, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with landmarks dating back to medieval times. Within Baku’s walled fortress there are numerous historic sites, including the medieval Palace of the Shirvanshahs, the highlight of the Old City and a must-see for any visitor. In sharp contrast to the Old Town, downtown Baku features ultra‑modern architecture such as the Heydar Aliyev Center, the Flame Towers, and the Crystal Hall. The city center is filled with elegant buildings, and there is a vast promenade along the seafront. About the destination: Gabala, also known as Qabala, is a city in the Republic of Azerbaijan and the capital of the Qabala Rayon. Gabala and the village of Küsnat. Before the city was known as Kutkashen, but after the Republic of Azerbaijan's independence the town was renamed in honour of the much older city of Gabala, the former capital of Caucasian Albania, the archaeological site of which is about 20 km southwest.
